FITNESS FOR WORK
FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY EVALUATION (FCE)
FCE is a holistic functional assessment which is done in conjunction with the clinical assessment of the patient’s physical, psycho-social, cognitive and motivational status. The purpose of Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) process is to establish the Baseline Functional Ability of the employee, ensure correct initial placements and to return ill or injured workers safely to work.
FCE’s ensure that employees are fit for and suited to the work they are to do and meet the inherent job requirements for the relevant occupation - that the health of employees is not adversely affected by their work tasks or working environment.
The concept “fitness to work” implies that occupation has inherent health and fitness requirements which must be met in order to minimize the risk of harm to self or others. For this reason, the occupational therapists will evaluate a workers’ functional abilities, and measure the abilities against the potential risks posed by an occupation.
OBJECTIVES OF THE FCE PROCESS
Ensure that physical, functional and mental impairments do not place the health of the worker (or other workers) at risk.
Injured of ill workers, are evaluated to establish level of functionality and to evaluate if the worker has reached
a functional plateau.
UNSUITABLY PLACED WORKERS
Unsuitably placed workers are identified and assisted in appropriate steps to either improve their health status or are assisted to seek appropriate alternative occupations.
Monitor employees state of health on a regular basis (periodical examination)
so as to detect diseases or any deterioration in function or fitness at an early stage, thereby determining the efficiency of control measures.
Promote optimal health status of employees through identifying: Treatable medical conditions that may render them temporarily unable to perform their work; Chronic illnesses that may have no bearing on their current fitness to work, but that may threaten their personal long-term health; and Referral to remediation or rehabilitation where indicated.
Establish employee’s state of health before commencing with employment (“baseline”), and on every occasion where there is transfer to another job during his/her employ with the company, thereby ensuring the worker meets the inherent requirements of the job.
