Driving is an essential but high-risk activity. Very few organizations can operate without drivers of some sort, including vehicles on road or driving of machinery.

DRIVING AS AN ESSENTIAL SKILL

Driving is an essential skill, the incapacity to drive impacts on a worker’s ability to participate in the economy. Illness, disease and injury may have a serious impact on a person’s ability to drive. Our occupational therapists can perform comprehensive driving vehicle and machinery evaluations, which include: Clinical Evaluation-physical, vision, and cognitive components. On road driving / machinery evaluation.

DRIVERS IN ORGANIZATION

Drivers (vehicle and machinery), within the organization may find driver assessment or training, to be unnecessary or intimidating. The Employer’s approach towards driver assessment policies should be positively communicated and would need to be enforced as part of recruitment, training and staff appraisal. It is not only physical or mental disability that impairs driving skills. Medical illnesses, such as HIV, Diabetes, Blood Pressure, Epilepsy, CVA, visual conditions and age might pose a significant risk to workers.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ADPTED DRIVING AIDS

Recommendations for adapted driving aids and vehicle modifications or prescriptions, Simulated driving and Virtual reality technology, closed circuit course, on-road assessment, on-road training, vehiclemodification recommendation / prescription, patient education. Diagnosis includes: Physical disabilities (Spinal Injury, Amputation), Neurological and Cognitive Impairments (CVA, Brain injuries and tumors) and Mental Disorders.
